Surah Az-Zukhruf, Ayah 58 (43:58)
وَقَالُـوۡٓا ءَاٰلِهَتُنَا خَيۡرٌ اَمۡ هُوَؕ مَا ضَرَبُوۡهُ لَكَ اِلَّا جَدَلًا ؕ بَلۡ هُمۡ قَوۡمٌ خَصِمُوۡنَ ٥٨
English translation (Pickthall)
And say: Are our gods better, or is he? They raise not the objection save for argument. Nay! but they are a contentious folk.

فَلَمَّا كَشَفۡنَا عَنۡهُمُ الۡعَذَابَ اِذَا هُمۡ يَنۡكُثُوۡنَ ٥٠
43:50But when We eased them of the torment, behold! they broke their word.
وَنَادٰى فِرۡعَوۡنُ فِىۡ قَوۡمِهٖ قَالَ يٰقَوۡمِ اَلَيۡسَ لِىۡ مُلۡكُ مِصۡرَ وَهٰذِهِ الۡاَنۡهٰرُ تَجۡرِىۡ مِنۡ تَحۡتِىۡۚ اَفَلَا تُبۡصِرُوۡنَؕ ٥١
43:51And Pharaoh caused a proclamation to be made among his people saying: O my people! Is not mine the sovereignty of Egypt and these rivers flowing under me? Can ye not then discern?
اَمۡ اَنَا خَيۡرٌ مِّنۡ هٰذَا الَّذِىۡ هُوَ مَهِيۡنٌࣙۙ وَّلَا يَكَادُ يُبِيۡنُ ٥٢
43:52I am surely better than this fellow, who is despicable and can hardly make (his meaning) plain!
فَلَوۡلَاۤ اُلۡقِىَ عَلَيۡهِ اَسۡوِرَةٌ مِّنۡ ذَهَبٍ اَوۡ جَآءَ مَعَهُ الۡمَلٰٓٮِٕكَةُ مُقۡتَرِنِيۡنَ ٥٣
43:53Why, then, have armlets of gold not been set upon him, or angels sent along with him?
فَاسۡتَخَفَّ قَوۡمَهٗ فَاَطَاعُوۡهُؕ اِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوۡا قَوۡمًا فٰسِقِيۡنَ ٥٤
43:54Thus he persuaded his people to make light (of Moses), and they obeyed him. Lo! they were a wanton folk.
فَلَمَّاۤ اٰسَفُوۡنَا انْتَقَمۡنَا مِنۡهُمۡ فَاَغۡرَقۡنٰهُمۡ اَجۡمَعِيۡنَۙ ٥٥
43:55So, when they angered Us, We punished them and drowned them every one.
فَجَعَلۡنٰهُمۡ سَلَفًا وَّمَثَلًا لِّلۡاٰخِرِيۡنَ ٥٦
43:56And We made them a thing past, and an example for those after (them).
وَلَمَّا ضُرِبَ ابۡنُ مَرۡيَمَ مَثَلًا اِذَا قَوۡمُكَ مِنۡهُ يَصِدُّوۡنَ ٥٧
43:57And when the son of Mary is quoted as an example, behold! the folk laugh out,
وَقَالُـوۡٓا ءَاٰلِهَتُنَا خَيۡرٌ اَمۡ هُوَؕ مَا ضَرَبُوۡهُ لَكَ اِلَّا جَدَلًا ؕ بَلۡ هُمۡ قَوۡمٌ خَصِمُوۡنَ ٥٨
43:58And say: Are our gods better, or is he? They raise not the objection save for argument. Nay! but they are a contentious folk.
اِنۡ هُوَ اِلَّا عَبۡدٌ اَنۡعَمۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ وَجَعَلۡنٰهُ مَثَلًا لِّبَنِىۡۤ اِسۡرَآءِيۡلَؕ ٥٩
43:59He is nothing but a slave on whom We bestowed favour, and We made him a pattern for the Children of Israel.
وَلَوۡ نَشَآءُ لَجَـعَلۡنَا مِنۡكُمۡ مَّلٰٓٮِٕكَةً فِى الۡاَرۡضِ يَخۡلُفُوۡنَ ٦٠
43:60And had We willed We could have set among you angels to be viceroys in the earth.
وَاِنَّهٗ لَعِلۡمٌ لِّلسَّاعَةِ فَلَا تَمۡتَرُنَّ بِهَا وَاتَّبِعُوۡنِؕ هٰذَا صِرَاطٌ مُّسۡتَقِيۡمٌ ٦١
43:61And lo! verily there is knowledge of the Hour. So doubt ye not concerning it, but follow Me. This is the right path.
وَلَا يَصُدَّنَّكُمُ الشَّيۡطٰنُ ۚ اِنَّهٗ لَكُمۡ عَدُوٌّ مُّبِيۡنٌ ٦٢
43:62And let not Satan turn you aside. Lo! he is an open enemy for you.
وَ لَمَّا جَآءَ عِيۡسٰى بِالۡبَيِّنٰتِ قَالَ قَدۡ جِئۡتُكُمۡ بِالۡحِكۡمَةِ وَلِاُبَيِّنَ لَكُمۡ بَعۡضَ الَّذِىۡ تَخۡتَلِفُوۡنَ فِيۡهِۚ فَاتَّقُوا اللّٰهَ وَاَطِيۡعُوۡنِ ٦٣
43:63When Jesus came with clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty), he said: I have come unto you with wisdom, and to make plain some of that concerning which ye differ. So keep your duty to Allah, and obey me.
