Surah Ash-Shura, Ayah 39 (42:39)

وَالَّذِيۡنَ اِذَاۤ اَصَابَهُمُ الۡبَغۡىُ هُمۡ يَنۡتَصِرُوۡنَ ۝٣٩

English translation (Pickthall)

And those who, when great wrong is done to them, defend themselves,

وَمِنۡ اٰيٰتِهِ الۡجَوَارِ فِى الۡبَحۡرِ كَالۡاَعۡلَامِؕ ۝٣٢

42:32And of His portents are the ships, like banners on the sea;

اِنۡ يَّشَاۡ يُسۡكِنِ الرِّيۡحَ فَيَظۡلَلۡنَ رَوَاكِدَ عَلٰى ظَهۡرِهٖؕ اِنَّ فِىۡ ذٰ لِكَ لَاٰيٰتٍ لِّـكُلِّ صَبَّارٍ شَكُوۡرٍۙ ۝٣٣

42:33If He will He calmeth the wind so that they keep still upon its surface - Lo! herein verily are signs for every steadfast grateful (heart). -

اَوۡ يُوۡبِقۡهُنَّ بِمَا كَسَبُوۡا وَيَعۡفُ عَنۡ كَثِيۡرٍ ۝٣٤

42:34Or He causeth them to perish on account of that which they have earned - And He forgiveth much -

وَّيَعۡلَمَ الَّذِيۡنَ يُجَادِلُوۡنَ فِىۡۤ اٰيٰتِنَاؕ مَا لَهُمۡ مِّنۡ مَّحِيۡصٍ ۝٣٥

42:35And that those who argue concerning Our revelations may know they have no refuge.

فَمَاۤ اُوۡتِيۡتُمۡ مِّنۡ شَىۡءٍ فَمَتَاعُ الۡحَيٰوةِ الدُّنۡيَاۚ وَمَا عِنۡدَ اللّٰهِ خَيۡرٌ وَّاَبۡقٰى لِلَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا وَعَلٰى رَبِّهِمۡ يَتَوَكَّلُوۡنَۚ ۝٣٦

42:36Now whatever ye have been given is but a passing comfort for the life of the world, and that which Allah hath is better and more lasting for those who believe and put their trust in their Lord,

وَالَّذِيۡنَ يَجۡتَنِبُوۡنَ كَبٰٓٮِٕرَ الۡاِثۡمِ وَالۡفَوَاحِشَ وَاِذَا مَا غَضِبُوۡا هُمۡ يَغۡفِرُوۡنَۚ ۝٣٧

42:37And those who shun the worst of sins and indecencies and, when they are wroth, forgive,

وَالَّذِيۡنَ اسۡتَجَابُوۡا لِرَبِّهِمۡ وَاَقَامُوا الصَّلٰوةَ  وَاَمۡرُهُمۡ شُوۡرٰى بَيۡنَهُمۡ وَمِمَّا رَزَقۡنٰهُمۡ يُنۡفِقُوۡنَۚ ۝٣٨

42:38And those who answer the call of their Lord and establish worship, and whose affairs are a matter of counsel, and who spend of what We have bestowed on them,

وَالَّذِيۡنَ اِذَاۤ اَصَابَهُمُ الۡبَغۡىُ هُمۡ يَنۡتَصِرُوۡنَ ۝٣٩

42:39And those who, when great wrong is done to them, defend themselves,

وَجَزٰٓؤُا سَيِّئَةٍ سَيِّئَةٌ مِّثۡلُهَاۚ فَمَنۡ عَفَا وَاَصۡلَحَ فَاَجۡرُهٗ عَلَى اللّٰهِؕ اِنَّهٗ لَا يُحِبُّ الظّٰلِمِيۡنَ ۝٤٠

42:40The guerdon of an ill-deed is an ill the like thereof. But whosoever pardoneth and amendeth, his wage is the affair of Allah. Lo! He loveth not wrong-doers.

وَلَمَنِ انْتَصَرَ بَعۡدَ ظُلۡمِهٖ فَاُولٰٓٮِٕكَ مَا عَلَيۡهِمۡ مِّنۡ سَبِيۡلٍؕ ۝٤١

42:41And whoso defendeth himself after he hath suffered wrong - for such, there is no way (of blame) against them.

اِنَّمَا السَّبِيۡلُ عَلَى الَّذِيۡنَ يَظۡلِمُوۡنَ النَّاسَ وَ يَبۡغُوۡنَ فِى الۡاَرۡضِ بِغَيۡرِ الۡحَقِّؕ اُولٰٓٮِٕكَ لَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ اَلِيۡمٌ ۝٤٢

42:42The way (of blame) is only against those who oppress mankind, and wrongfully rebel in the earth. For such there is a painful doom.

وَلَمَنۡ صَبَرَ وَغَفَرَ اِنَّ ذٰ لِكَ لَمِنۡ عَزۡمِ الۡاُمُوۡرِ ۝٤٣

42:43And verily whoso is patient and forgiveth - lo! that, verily, is (of) the stedfast heart of things.
