Surah As-Saaffat, Ayah 156 (37:156)

اَمۡ لَـكُمۡ سُلۡطٰنٌ مُّبِيۡنٌۙ ۝١٥٦

English translation (Pickthall)

Or have ye a clear warrant?

اِذۡ نَجَّيۡنٰهُ وَاَهۡلَهٗۤ اَجۡمَعِيۡنَۙ ۝١٣٤

37:134When We saved him and his household, every one,

اِلَّا عَجُوۡزًا فِى الۡغٰبِرِيۡنَ ۝١٣٥

37:135Save an old woman among those who stayed behind;

ثُمَّ دَمَّرۡنَا الۡاٰخَرِيۡنَ ۝١٣٦

37:136Then We destroyed the others.

وَاِنَّكُمۡ لَتَمُرُّوۡنَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ مُّصۡبِحِيۡنَۙ ۝١٣٧

37:137And lo! ye verily pass by (the ruin of) them in the morning

وَبِالَّيۡلِؕ اَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُوۡنَ ۝١٣٨

37:138And at night-time; have ye then no sense?

وَاِنَّ يُوۡنُسَ لَمِنَ الۡمُرۡسَلِيۡنَؕ ۝١٣٩

37:139And lo! Jonah verily was of those sent (to warn)

اِذۡ اَبَقَ اِلَى الۡفُلۡكِ الۡمَشۡحُوۡنِۙ ۝١٤٠

37:140When he fled unto the laden ship,

فَسَاهَمَ فَكَانَ مِنَ الۡمُدۡحَضِيۡنَۚ ۝١٤١

37:141And then drew lots and was of those rejected;

فَالۡتَقَمَهُ الۡحُوۡتُ وَهُوَ مُلِيۡمٌ ۝١٤٢

37:142And the fish swallowed him while he was blameworthy;

فَلَوۡلَاۤ اَنَّهٗ كَانَ مِنَ الۡمُسَبِّحِيۡنَۙ ۝١٤٣

37:143And had he not been one of those who glorify (Allah)

لَلَبِثَ فِىۡ بَطۡنِهٖۤ اِلٰى يَوۡمِ يُبۡعَثُوۡنَۚ ۝١٤٤

37:144He would have tarried in its belly till the day when they are raised;

فَنَبَذۡنٰهُ بِالۡعَرَآءِ وَهُوَ سَقِيۡمٌۚ ۝١٤٥

37:145Then We cast him on a desert shore while he was sick;

وَاَنۡۢبَتۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ شَجَرَةً مِّنۡ يَّقۡطِيۡنٍۚ ۝١٤٦

37:146And We caused a tree of gourd to grow above him;

وَاَرۡسَلۡنٰهُ اِلٰى مِائَةِ اَلۡفٍ اَوۡ يَزِيۡدُوۡنَۚ ۝١٤٧

37:147And We sent him to a hundred thousand (folk) or more

فَاٰمَنُوۡا فَمَتَّعۡنٰهُمۡ اِلٰى حِيۡنٍؕ ۝١٤٨

37:148And they believed, therefor We gave them comfort for a while.

فَاسۡتَفۡتِهِمۡ اَلِرَبِّكَ الۡبَنَاتُ وَلَهُمُ الۡبَنُوۡنَۙ ۝١٤٩

37:149Now ask them (O Muhammad): Hath thy Lord daughters whereas they have sons?

اَمۡ خَلَقۡنَا الۡمَلٰٓٮِٕكَةَ اِنَاثًا وَّهُمۡ شٰهِدُوۡنَ ۝١٥٠

37:150Or created We the angels females while they were present?

اَلَاۤ اِنَّهُمۡ مِّنۡ اِفۡكِهِمۡ لَيَقُوۡلُوۡنَۙ ۝١٥١

37:151Lo! it is of their falsehood that they say:

وَلَدَ اللّٰهُۙ وَاِنَّهُمۡ لَـكٰذِبُوۡنَ ۝١٥٢

37:152Allah hath begotten. Allah! verily they tell a lie.

اَصۡطَفَى الۡبَنَاتِ عَلَى الۡبَنِيۡنَؕ ۝١٥٣

37:153(And again of their falsehood): He hath preferred daughters to sons.

مَا لَـكُمۡ كَيۡفَ تَحۡكُمُوۡنَ ۝١٥٤

37:154What aileth you? How judge ye?

اَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُوۡنَۚ ۝١٥٥

37:155Will ye not then reflect?

اَمۡ لَـكُمۡ سُلۡطٰنٌ مُّبِيۡنٌۙ ۝١٥٦

37:156Or have ye a clear warrant?

فَاۡتُوۡا بِكِتٰبِكُمۡ اِنۡ كُنۡتُمۡ صٰدِقِيۡنَ ۝١٥٧

37:157Then produce your writ, if ye are truthful.

وَجَعَلُوۡا بَيۡنَهٗ وَبَيۡنَ الۡجِنَّةِ نَسَبًا ؕ وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمَتِ الۡجِنَّةُ اِنَّهُمۡ لَمُحۡضَرُوۡنَۙ ۝١٥٨

37:158And they imagine kinship between him and the jinn, whereas the jinn know well that they will be brought before (Him).

سُبۡحٰنَ اللّٰهِ عَمَّا يَصِفُوۡنَۙ ۝١٥٩

37:159Glorified be Allah from that which they attribute (unto Him),

اِلَّا عِبَادَ اللّٰهِ الۡمُخۡلَصِيۡنَ ۝١٦٠

37:160Save single-minded slaves of Allah.
